When Crystal first told me she always transplanted her corn, I thought she was just trying to get a rise out of me. Corn is one of those plants that the books say you direct seed - always.

However, it won me over, and now we transplant about half our corn every year. We harvest from the transplanted plants about a week earlier than the direct-seeded. And, the transplants are much more resilient to the birds, pillbugs, and slugs that love to eat the tender corn sprout just as it’s emerging.
